The ScanGaugeII is a 3-in-1 automotive computer that combines a multifunction trip computer, diagnostic scan tool, and up to 37 digital gauges in one small package. It connects easily to your vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic (OBDII) port and communicates directly with the vehicle's computer. Not sure if your car uses OBDII or Controller Area Network (CAN)? The unit will automatically determine which system to use and switch to it. The ScanGaugeII works on all 1996 or newer OBDII cars, including gas, diesel, propane and hybrid vehicles, as well as vehicles with the latest CAN systems. A detachable cable allows for easy transfer between multiple vehicles. Its menu-driven operation means there's no need to memorize complex sequences, and no tools are required for installation. The ScanGaugeII has been redesigned with expandable Add-A-Gauge (aka XGauge) technology. Add to the original 12 gauges by customizing the ScanGaugeII to monitor up to 25 more--depending on your specific vehicle's sensor design. Four gauges can be displayed simultaneously and can help determine fuel consumption rates, allowing you to adjust driving behavior and save gas. At the same time, keep an eye on coolant temperature, engine speed, and much more in real time. If there is a young driver in the house or friends borrow your car, the ScanGaugeII can record speeds of up to 158 mph and store the information for you to view later, so you will know just how fast your young driver or friend was going last night. The ScanGaugeII includes a diagnostic scan tool that can check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), clear the codes, and turn off the "Check Engine" light on 99% of 1996 and newer vehicles. (However, this feature may not work on some trouble codes in Dodge vehicles.) If any DTCs are found, the ScanGauge will show how many there are as well as the codes themselves. Then you can use the Internet or repair manual to find out which is the failed part is, so you can repair it yourself or know what needs to be fixed at the mechanic's shop. Four sets of data are automatically recorded on the trip computer: Current, Today, Previous Day, and Tank Trip. The "current" trip restarts after the engine has been off for more than 3 minutes. The "today" trip restarts after the vehicle has not moved for 9 hours, and the data from "today" is moved to "previous day" when you restart the car, so you don't have to reset the computer every time you begin a trip. "Tank trip" resets when you fill up the tank. It can provide you with "to empty" data and other useful information, which can be viewed any time during the trip. The trip computer also integrates information from the Cost Per Mile gauge. Simply enter how much you paid per gallon or liter of fuel, and the ScanGauge will automatically calculate the cost of your trips as you drive.  Excellent for saving gas August 20, 2008

Bought this for my truck to see if I could squeeze out a few more MPG. So far so good. First couple of tanks I probably increased my mileage by 1 to 2 mpg. It allows you to monitor quite a few engine functions and is not too hard to set up and use if you have a technical bent. It connects via a cable to the on board diagnostics port which is standard on all newer cars from 1996 on up. Power comes from the OBD2 port so there is nothing else to hook up. It is LED backlit and can be configured to match the color of your dash lights.
Now that I have had it a few weeks I am starting to get more involved with the trip functions. It allows you to set up the size of your tank and then when you fill up, you can adjust how much it thinks you burned. This allows the unit to apply a fudge factor to try and make it more accurate. Once dialed in, it should be very accurate at telling me how much I'm getting on a tank, how much gas is left and even my cost per mile based on the last price per gallon I paid.
Lastly, it will allow you to read codes stored in the computer and reset them if necessary. For the money, its probably the best diagnostic tool there is.

the reason it gets a 4 star,is the web site should
contain more info on commands and have more programmable
gauges.it is difficult to come by this info on the web
but still think the product is great,for the tech geeks
who wants to know all those useless data that comes from
their ECU HA HA

This is great. It has never been off by more than 1/2 gallon when I fill up. I think the most useful ones were tank MPG and miles to empty. The directions are a little jumbled. As most things you learn how to use it by toying around with it till you find what your looking for.

This product is a great addition to a vehicle that is not equipped with instrumentation to observe the parameters offered by this product. However, one must work with the directions to set up the product's ability to compute miles per gallon. This is not a negative comment. The product is clever in that it uses other measurements that do not directly measuring fuel consumption. Even if you don't calibrate it to the last mpg, you quickly see the results of your driving style and it gives you an opportunity develop a driving style that can improve your mileage.

I bought the scan gauge for my new Smart Car to monitor gas mileage. However, you have to make adjustments to the gauge with every fill-up. For example - how much gas you put in versus how much gas the gauge thought you put in - as well as price per gallon if you want to track that info (which I can see having to do). It does install easily and gives you a wealth of info at the touch of a finger. Have not been able to adjust exactly the lght display color to match the dash lights but it is close enough.
