5 out of 5 stars Work as advertised   July 30, 2006

I purchased to clear an old error code on my 2000 Jeep. The code was minor, but prevented me from getting smog check approval. In California, your car can pass the actual emissions sniff test with flying colors, but "fail" for ANY outstanding error code in the computer. I plugged the device in, and 3 minutes later; presto no more code, and was able to get passed the smog check.

Device is easy to use and work as advertised. I considered the next model up in the Actron product range, but did not add much value for my needs. The main extra feature was providing actual text for each error code. With the 9125, you get the codes only, and then need to look-up the description in the manual.

I paid $70 at the local Pep Boys, but only because of the urgent need. The Amazon price is a good value.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion so you don't waste diagnostic fees   April 25, 2007

I have read down thru the reviews and I would like to point out some issues I have with some low scores..

First, why would someone give a low score to something they purchased knowing it had the least features of any other units. The ratings are about the unit in question.

Second, if you read the code, then start throwing parts at your car having no mechanical knowledge, don't come here and start complaining that this unit didn't do your dishes for you too.

This is an inexpensive tool that will allow you to get the information from you car, and can also clear a CEL, 'Check Engine Light' that was set off because of a DTC, 'Diagnostic Trouble Code.' I gave it 5 stars because it does exactly what it says it does, does it well, and is well built. No E-bay garbage here. It will not, however, give you a mechanics point of view. That is training that you will need to buy from elsewhere ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Great diagnostic tool   December 16, 2006

Have a Merc Mountaineer that showed a "check engine" light. Ever price having the dealer check out the computer? Here, it would be $85 just to check the code. With this unit, I found the issue quickly and was able to fix it myself.

Very nice unit, and inexpensive.

5 out of 5 stars Simple to use   February 11, 2007

Bought this like other reviewers in order to simply find out what kind of problem is causing the check engine light to come on. Depending on what's read I can then decide how important it is for me to either delay or immediately get the problem fixed. Device works very well and its easy to use. Instructions are fine and once you read the codes and write them down, you can erase the code to shut off the check engine light. And the price is certainly reasonable.
The weakness in this product and similar devices may be in finding out what the codes mean. In my case have a German car (BMW)and also have the shop manual for it. So codes the device displays can be found in my shop manaul but I may not find them in the software list that comes with the device. Suspect that domestic car codes would be covered more completed but don't know for sure. In any case if you want to fix the car yourself would strongly recommend a shop manual which lists all the OBD codes for your specific car.

For the person needing an inexpensive way to know what that Check Engine light on the dashboard means, this is the tool. It's cheaper than taking it to the dealership to have them read the code for you and clear the light 1 TIME! It works with just about any vehicle made since 1996. I have used it on both a Dodge Pickup and a Ford Expedition and it works great. And it's small enough to just leave in the glovebox - especially if you have a vehicle that's as finicky as my Ford. It illuminates the Check Engine every time a cylinder misfires. Being able to know that immediately and also be able to clear the code so the light goes away has been awesome. I know right away that it's the same problem I had before and not something new that really needs to be checked into immediately.
