It's a great tool and a great toy May 14, 2007 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This thermometer works great for household use such as checking temperatures of air vents, windows, ceilings, oven, grill, etc. I have especially found it useful for checking water temperature. Just point it at the water and you have the temperature. I use it at the pool, lake, ocean, hot tub, and any other body of water. It was also fun having this at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, checking the temperature of all the geologic hot spots.
accurate and fun April 4, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
The best points for me are (1) you can switch between F and C with a button beside the display; (2) auto-off; (3) takes standard batteries. Seems to be completely accurate and it measures very quickly.
Good product, price, and service September 22, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I got this thermometer to check around my house for cold spots around windows, door, etc. It's easily isolated areas that lacked insulation and made it a lot easier to address the problems before it gets colder. The device is exactly as described, it includes a very functional case for storage, runs on standard AAA batteries, was delivered faster than I'd expected, and I'm completely satisfied. And after you've used it for the purpose that got you to purchase it in the first place, it's a lot of fun to play with -- how warm is the dog (I got that idea from another reviewer), how hot does the oven door get, what's the difference in temp on the hot/cold water lines before/after putting on pipe insulation, how cold is my drink, etc. It's not all useful information, but it's entertaining.
Cool tool- still discovering uses May 8, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this for my home inspection business, but have also used it to find a dead cylinder on a buddy's truck (that exhaust port didn't heat up as fast), found missing insulation between studs without opening the wall, evaluated the Dachsund's temperature from across the room.
Very easy to use- point the laser at the object and pull the trigger. It also includes a conventional rapid read thermometer for even more measurements.
If what you do involves knowing temperatures, this is a great addition to your toolbox.
My HandyToy February 22, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I wanted to check how badly my house was insulated. My ideal choice would have been using an infrared video camera, but that wouldn't be practical. An infrared Thermometer seemed to be an excellent alternative. I began to look at the available options, comparing temperature ranges and measuring area (Ratios 6:1, 12:1, etc). This IR Thermometer had the best mesuring areas (12:1) and largest temperature reading range out of everything that I looked at (-58 to 932F). The addition of a case and analog thermometer was a really nice bonus. The day it was delivered, it had been sitting outside in temperatures below zero for several hours. It caused random error messages until it started to warm up. Once it warmed up, I began to measure the temperature of the inner walls of my house. The room temperature was set to about 68 and the inside walls were measuring around 65. Since I expected the walls to be slightly cooler, I was pretty confident with it's accuracy. I began to test the windows and the outer walls (from inside the house). I found that my windows were about 10-15 degrees colder than the walls. My older windows were even worse. It helped me realize the importance of newer windows. One window was so cold that I began looking it over to see if something was wrong. It turned out that the window was open about 1/4 of an inch. I'm sure i was losing lots of heat through that window. I probably never would have noticed it otherwise. The thermometer probably paid for itself right there. It turned out to be a really handy tool. The only problem that I noticed was that when I used it outside, it gave me temperatures that were a lot colder than the actual air temperature. With -4 degree temperatures, I was getting -18 degree readings from the sidewalk. I'm guessing that's why many of the IR thermometers don't give readings that cold. It doesn't really bother me though since I didn't get it for reading cold temperatures and it still wasn't too far off. After using it for serious reasons, I decided to just play around with it. I measured the temperature of light bulbs, my cooking range, food, and just about anything else in my range when it's in my hand. It's really handy and fun to use. I would recommend this product to anyone interested in an IR thermometer.
